Southeastern Transportation Center

Research

The research component of the STC focuses entirely on transportation safety issues of regional and national importance. In the past, research projects addressing issues ranging from school bus safety to work zone traffic control to transit security have been successfully undertaken. STC has worked with the STC Education and Research Advisory Committees and regional and national officials and selected three major research issues to address over a one to three year time frame. STC faculty, students, and researchers from around the region will all work toward addressing parts of the problem, and will regularly interface and interact. UT as the lead institution will be responsible for coordinating and consolidating the component research parts into a final and overall solution. The approach allows region-wide input and should encourage regional and national interest in STC research projects. It also takes advantage of the unique and specialized capabilities at the STC universities across the region, while assuring that research resources remain focused on a common and large-scale problem(s).

Our experience also indicates that small "seed" grants to STC faculty and students to explore new issues or innovative, high-risk solutions have many benefits both from the research and educational standpoint (similar to the SHRP and TRANSIT, programs but on a reduced scale). Our 1996-97 Annual Plan and future plans will provide such seed grants in the area of transportation safety, either related to one of our major research areas or to conduct preliminary investigations into potentially fruitful future research areas.
