Intermodal Transportation & Safety

Dr. Arun Chatterjee, is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University. Previously he was employed by Wilbur Smith Associates, Marquette University, and North Carolina Department of Transportation. He chaired the Urban Goods Movement Committee of TRB for six years. He also chaired a committee on Urban Goods Movement of ASCE. In recent years he has been involved with several studies dealing with freight transportation and safety.

The Primary purpose of this course is to develop a sound understanding of the various aspects of intermodal transporttion, including safety. Clear answers to the following types of topics and questions will be identified.

  1. Identify in detail the system of transportation modes in USA for passengers and freight. Identify the suppliers of transportation service as well as providers of physical infrastructure. recognize the spatial / geographic limits / orientation of service--urban, inter-city, and international--in developing the classification scheme.
  2. What has been the role of public agencies in providing transportation for passengers and freight at both local, state and national/international levels?
  3. What is intermodal transportation for passenger and freight? What are the advantages and disadvantages of intermodal transportation for passengers and freight?
  4. For each component of the transportation system, identify the existing safety related issues. Special attention is given to safety issures involving intermodal transportation--where intermodal transfers take place and/or two or more modes or service/routes intersect/overlap. discuss what can be and is being done to slove the safety problems.
  5. How can intermodal transportation be fostered at various levels--local, state, national/internationl? What can the various public agencies and private companies do to continue the growth of intermodal transportation?
